Bonjour! We made it to gay Paris finally and it didn't disappoint one bit. Our hotel was a short walk from the metro station which made it easy to get around to see the sights. It was really excting to be here again and we were both looking forward to exploring this amazing city once more.
We woke up to a traditional french breakfast of croissant, bagette, preserves and cafe ou lait at our hotel. The breakfast was just as we remembered French breakfasts to be like from our previous trips to France, yummy!.
One thing that was clearly evident is that Cup Du Monde - Rugby World Cup 2007 fever definitely had Paris in its grasp. There was a sport shop around the corner from our hotel that had a huge promotion in the window of the All Blacks - which was bigger than the one for France.
The All Blacks are huge here and they love them almost as much as their precious Les Bleus. That evening we caught the metro across Paris to go and see the famous Eiffel Tower. When we got there the weather had taken a turn for the worse but it was still such an amazing sight to see. We got some photos but it was so cold compared to the heat of the Asian summer that we had left behind and to make matters worse it was drizzling so we decided we would come back another day to see it at night. We had some French wine and cheese at our hotel YUM then later went out for a lovely dinner of mussells. We noticed that they were little compared to NZ mussells but there were heaps of them and they were very flavoursome and yummy. (We do like trying to make people hungry whilst reading our blog!) The next day we went to see Notre Came cathedral. What can you say other than STUNNING! There were people everywhere and the queue to get in was so long. So we took a page out of the Asian queueing techniques and went in through the exit instead. We never actually did this in Asia but we did at Notre Dame! Yes it was a bit cheeky but worth it as the interior was quite incredible and we were extra lucky as there was a service in progress with a wonderfully melodic choir singing as well. Then Tama played with a rugby ball for awhile on a temporary sand rugby pitch outside the Hotel de Ville (I guess it was for the World Cup!)We then traipsed across Paris to the Musee de Pompedieu. It had big escalators up the sides of the building and amazing views of Paris from the top floors. It was huge and full of amazing modern works from a number of very famous artists like Jackson Pollock and Picasso. There were also some definite UNIQUE pieces to say the least (some very odd installation stuff like big stuffed toys that drop from the ceiling!).
From here we walked through the gorgeous streets and found a wonderful restaurant where we had a delcious meal for lunch finished off with une cafe.
Our next stop was the famous Musee de Louvre. The weather once again let us down and it began to drizzle. We donned our rain jackets to keep warm as well as dry and got the compulsory tourist pictures. There was a cute old man feeding the birds so we sat and watched him for awhile (he did have quite a lovely backdrop behind him as you can see!) There wasn't much time left until the museum closed so we decided to come back another time so that we could have a decent look around. Instead we walked to the Champ Elysees and on the way Olivia's jandal broke. A couple of days earlier my jandal broke in Shanghai so we decided we would go shopping in one of Paris's most famous retail areas. We ended up getting a flash new pair of jandals each and then walked up to see the Arc de Triumph. There was some sort of ceremony or celebration going on at the Arc so there were lots of people at every possible vantage point taking photos. We got some of course as this was one of the sights that Liv was really looking forward to seeing whilst we were here. That night we went for a big walk up the hill to Sacre Couer (hope I spelt that right?) It was gorgeous as ever and the merry-go-round at the bottom of the stairs leading up to it is so cute. We went inside which we hadn't done before (that I can remember anyway, did we in 1999 Mum and Dad?). The inside was stunning esp looking at the big dome in the roof from underneath. We had a delicious french meal with french red wine nearby in Montmatre..... then walked back down the hill and got on the metro back to our hotel. On our final day in Paris we went back to Le Louvre and went inside to the magnificent museum. We got photos at the place famous in the novel the Da Vinci Code where the holy grail ('holding grill' in Asia's version of the film!) is suppossed to be kept :) We spent a great few hours looking at all the amazing old paintings and sculptures including of course the Mona Lisa (see photo below to see how many other people wanted a look at the same time we did! The cakes in the shop on our way out were so beautiful they should almost have been displayed in the museum too. But at 5euro each we decided to pass! On our last night we went back to the Eiffel Tower and watched the light show it puts on everynight. It was very pretty and kind of majical since it's such a famously romantic thing to do and all! Next stop St Jean Pe De Port in the south of France!.....
